Snap-In Dentures: A Secure, Comfortable Alternative to Traditional Dentures

Let’s be honest: conventional dentures are a simple and effective solution for missing teeth, but they may not work for everyone. While they restore aesthetics and oral function, they can slip or shift when eating or speaking. Snap-in dentures (overdentures) in Abingdon, Virginia, offer a more innovative solution for replacing missing teeth. Expertly placed at Abingdon Smiles, snap-in dentures provide greater stability and comfort, restoring your quality of life.

What are snap-in dentures?

Snap-in dentures or implant-retained dentures (overdentures) are a type of removable denture secured in the jawbone with dental implants. Instead of relying on suction or adhesives to remain in place, they snap on implants for better support.

Here’s how they work:

  • A few dental implants (usually 2 – 6) are gently placed into your jawbone.
  • Once the area heals, we design your custom denture to “snap” securely onto the implants using special connectors.
  • You can easily remove the denture for cleaning, but it feels stable and secure when it’s in place.

Overdentures can restore all the teeth in your upper jaw, lower jaw, or both, giving you the stability of implants with the convenience of a removable denture.

What can I expect from the procedure?

Getting overdentures involves a few steps, but we’ll ensure you are fully informed and comfortable.

Here’s how your procedure unfolds:

  • Consultation: We will assess your bone quality, gum health, and medical history to determine your eligibility. We’ll also use digital X-rays and scans to create a personalized treatment plan.
  • Implant placement: The dentist will carefully place 2 – 6 implants in the jawbone. This is done under local anesthesia to maximize your comfort.
  • Healing: During the next few months, your implants will heal and bond with the jawbone, establishing a solid foundation for your denture.
  • Restoration: We’ll design a custom denture to ensure optimal comfort, function, and aesthetics. The denture is attached to the implants with special connectors, restoring your ability to speak, smile, and eat without restrictions.

What are the benefits of implant-retained dentures?

Overdentures have changed the game for those who want full mouth restoration with a reliable solution.

Here’s a closer look at the benefits of snap-in dentures:

  • Enhanced stability and confidence: Overdentures remain secure when eating, laughing, and speaking. Many patients report satisfaction compared to traditional dentures.
  • Better chewing ability: Snap-in dentures restore your chewing power, allowing you to enjoy a wider selection of foods. Besides, better chewing improves digestion and nutrient intake.
  • Jawbone stabilization: Dental implants stimulate your jawbone to regenerate as you chew and grind food. This maintains your jawbone structure, preventing the sunken-in appearance synonymous with prolonged tooth loss.
  • Durable fix: Although the initial costs may be higher than traditional dentures, snap-in dentures last longer. Their longevity makes them a fantastic long-term investment.
  • Convenient maintenance: Overdentures are removable for easier maintenance, just like their conventional counterparts, but without the hassle of adhesives. Snap-in dentures are a blend of flexibility and function.
From Loose Dentures to Secure Implants - Robert’s Story at Abingdon Smiles

Hi, my name is Robert Mitchell and I have a wonderful story to tell. About seven, eight years ago, my teeth went bad and I had upper plate and on upper teeth bull that was working out fine. So went to the dentist and kept getting them fixed. The bottom ones all, he said, just you best deal. Just pull all four of them teeth. He got left. So he did pull all four of them teeth, give me a bottom denture , and it really looked nice. I told had one, two big problems. When I talked, he jumped up and down. When I ate, they got stuck to the food, anger. It was embarrassing. I wouldn’t go to register with my wife anymore. It was too embarrassment. So my wife finally said, you got to do something because you’re getting depressed. She rolled this tooth deal. I see like me, if you had to take, I got you might get depressed too.

So she taught me into going into Abingdon Smiles, and that was the best move I ever made, got. My wife knew what to do Anyway, the doctor told me, said I could put implants in there and then you use your plate to snap down on those implants and your plate won’t move up and down. I said, Ram, I didn’t really believe him, but I thought, Hey, I got to do something or I do this anymore, so it’s okay. I’ll give it a try. So he put four implants in my mouth and lo and behold my plates snap into those implants and they was kind of locked down. They did not move. They have it to this day. It’s been seven, eight years ago. It just like having natural teeth. I could eat apples, oranges, anything I want and nothing, and I smile all the time.

I am so happy that I got these teeth. I want to show ’em off. I’m tired of going around like this trying to talk to somebody and that just ain’t nice. Anybody that’s got bottom dentures, this food’s getting under ’em when they eat or they’re jumping up and down when they talk or they’re sticking to the food and they can’t eat apples, that type food, they really ought to talk to their dentist about inserts. It’s painless. I had no pain, no follow up. You put ’em in. I snapped my bottle plate on. I went home and all I do is brush ’em and just like my regular teeth, put ’em in soak at night to clean them. Good. And I still, it’s unbelievable, but I’m still happy with my teeth, with my inserts. I just wouldn’t tell everybody because you’re missing out. It can change your life.

It really can. If you got teeth, bottom dentures that jumping up and down you’re having trouble with, it’s worth your money and your time to get dentures put in because it is a life-changing experience. I really would recommend that you go to Abingdon Smiles because they were very nice there. You ain’t going to be had no pain expense wise. I don’t remember what it costing now, but got to tell you, if it wasn’t that much, but whatever it costs, it’s worth every penny of ’em anymore because all I do now is I get ’em checked every six months and no pay, no gain.
